BELLFLOWER, Calif. – Newborn octuplets in Southern California are a feisty bunch that appear healthy even at nine weeks premature, a doctor said Tuesday.

Three babies are being given oxygen but appeared to be doing well, said Dr. Mandhir Gupta, a neonatologist at Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center. Two of the newborns were initially on ventilators but no longer need them.

At least four could be ready for their first oral feeding later Tuesday.

"All babies were delivered vigorous, crying, kicking. Everyone was very excited," said Dr. Karen E. Maples, chief of service for obstetrics and gynecology and the physician who personally delivered Baby No. 8.

The mother, who has not been identified, gave birth Monday to the six boys and two girls weighing between 1 pound, 8 ounces, and 3 pounds, 4 ounces. She was resting comfortably Tuesday and was elated at welcoming eight children to her family, Gupta said.

The eighth baby surprised the parents and doctors who had prepared to deliver seven children.

"It is quite easy to miss a baby when you're anticipating seven," said Dr. Harold Henry, chief of maternal and fetal medicine and one of 46 doctors, nurses and assistants who delivered the children by Caesarean section.

Two of the newborns — the second live octuplets born in U.S. history — were initially put on ventilators but were later removed.

The mother checked into the hospital in her 23rd week of pregnancy. Hospital officials would not say whether she had used fertility drugs, which make multiple births more likely.

The babies — dubbed with the letters A-through-H — will probably remain in the hospital for at least two months and the mother could be released in a week.

The world's first live octuplets were born in March 1967 in Mexico City, but all died within 14 hours, according to Encyclopedia Britannica.

The United States' first live octuplets were born in Houston in 1998, three months premature. The tiniest died a week after the birth. The surviving siblings turned 10 in December.

As we mentioned earlier this week, a woman gave birth to EIGHT babies in California this past Monday. The woman, who has decided to remain anonnymous at the moment, gave birth to six boys and two girls.

While the hospital has not released her name, the media has found out her identity and is releasing some jaw-dropping info about this lady!!!!!!

- This "mother" already has six other children children. Yes, SIX!

- There's four older boys and two girls. And two of those six are twins!

- That's a total of 14 kids!!!!

- AND her husband, a contract worker, is set to return to Iraq!

- And we're hearing the mom is only in her late twenties!

- And she still lives at home with her parents!!!! In a two bedroom house

Some savvy reporting unearthed more crazy stuff about the momma who gave birth to octuplets earlier in the week.

A neighbor revealed that the momma's six kiddies AND the 8 new babies were made with sperm from one donor:

"She is single. She used a sperm donor, someone she knew, who donated sperm a long time ago. He donated the sperm for the first six kids and she used his frozen sperm for these one. I don't think the sperm donor knows about these eight kids. He was not involved."

This woman is insane!!!!!!!

The blabber, who asked to remain anonymous, went on to say:

"From what I heard she likes kids, she wants a jillion kids. She even lied to the doctors who impregnated her…. We should find out who the doctor is and where the money came from because this is irresponsible. The girl seemed a little off - and I don't want to be paying for her kids.""

And, there seems to be some confusion about the woman's age and her status.

The latest now is that she is indeed single (aged 33) and it is her father that is going to Iraq, to support the huge family.

According to the neighbor, the parents are very supportive of their daughter and even lost their own home in an effort to support her. "The parents lost their house supporting their daughter," the neighbor went on. "They actually bought this house for her, but then they lost their house supporting her and her kids and they had to move in with her. And now her father has to go back to Iraq to earn more money to support her. Her father either works as a truck driver or an interpreter [in Iraq]."

As to whether the mother herself works, the neighbor says: "She's a professional student and I want to know where the money's coming from to do this. Maybe she's using her student loans to do it."

This is some crazy, crazy stuff, if it's indeed true.

Is this why the family has stayed out of the spotlight?

33-year-old Nadya Suleman, the single mother who recently gave birth to a litter 8 kids, is asking for $2 million from suitors for sit-down media interviews. And she's all seeking commercial sponsors to help afford her 14 kids. Yes, 14.

Suleman, who lives in a 2 bedroom house with her bankrupt parents and older 6 kids (all under the age of 8, one of whom is autistic), plans on speaking with Oprah and Diane Sawyer, and getting paid for it.

But, the controversy surrounding her test tube babies may hinder Suleman's earning power, as Suleman's familial, financial, employment, and possibly mental circumstances are less than ideal, with the woman described as "obsessed with children."

Her fertility doctors are under some scrutiny as well, with experts stunned by their apparent lack of responsibility.

Nadya reportedly wants her own television series as a childcare expert.

Baby brand Custom Kingdom has reached out to the Suleman -- who has no job and supports her family on food stamps -- to donate clothing for all 14 of her children.

"We understand the financial strain one child can put on a family, let alone 14 little ones, so we would like to do our part and donate clothing from our line," the company says in a letter released exclusively to Usmagazine.com.


The company -- which also sent its cute "I'm Out on Parole" onesies to Knox and Viv after their July birth -- will "provide at least $500 in clothing each month, for one year."


Custom Kingdom has offered to send its own favorite designs each month, or let Suleman's kids select. And if the family is still struggling with funds after a year, the company -- which sells brands like Ninja, iPoo and Security on its Web site -- has agreed to continue sending clothes.

Earlier this month, Octo Mom's original PR team set up a Web site that accepted credit cards and listed an address to send gifts.

Suleman's mom, Angela, told The Insider Thursday that she'd "opt" for adoption if her daughter couldn't pay for the kids. Angela's southern California bungalow -- where all the kids reside -- is currently in foreclosure.

Meanwhile, the octuplets -- who just turned one month old -- are continuing to improve.

"They are alert and responsive to the care our nurses are providing them. In fact, we are slowly introducing them to nipple or bottle feeding a few times a day, and they're getting better and better at coordinating sucking, swallowing and breathing," their doctor said in a statement Thursday.

"Our nurses can't help but smile as each in turn gets stronger," the statement continued.
